The electroencephalogram (EEG) is a measure of brain waves. It is a test that provides evidence of how the brain functions over time. The EEG is used in the evaluation of brain disorders. Most commonly it is used to show the type and location of the activity in the brain during a seizure. It is a very effective test for diagnosing Epilepsy or cause of unexplained Seizure also called `Mirgi' in Hindi. The results of this test are reported by Neurologists.
Epilepsy is a disease mostly afflicting children and requires very long treatment lasting 3-15 years. Epilepsy can be caused due to psyiological or psychological reasons. If there is any physiological problem it would be detected either on CT Scan of the Brain or MRI of the Brain but if the seizures are due to any psychological factor then it would be diagnosed on EEG Study of the Brain.
Before the day of the electroencephalogram (EEG) test, tell your doctor if you are taking any medicines. Your doctor may ask you to stop taking certain medicines (such as sedatives and tranquilizers, muscle relaxants, sleeping aids, or medicines used to treat seizures) before the test. These medicines can affect your brain's usual electrical activity and cause abnormal test results. Wash your hair the night before the test. Do not use any oils, sprays, or conditioner on your hair before this test.
