KIDNEY URINARY BLADDER

Kidney stones is a very common condition specially in the northern region of the country. The water consumed by the population in this part of the country has a very high level of impurities which cause kidney and ureteric stones. Another major cause for the formation of kidney stones is the low level of Vitamin D. The Vitamin D acts as the Calcium channel regulator in the body and ensures the flow of calcium towards the bones. When Vitamin D is low, then this function gets impaired and the body starts to throw calcium out of the body. One of the route for excretion of calcium is the urinary system. When calcium is getting excreted from the body through the urine, it gets crystallized in the kidneys and forms stones. These calculi get stuck into the kidneys and cause hydronephrosis - an infection in the kidney. Sometimes, the stones move out of the kidney and get stuck into the ureter. Most commonly done test for the diagnosis of these kidney and ureteric stones is Ultrasound of the KUB region.

Diseases

Ultrasound of the KUB is used to diagnose any condition of the kidney, ureter and the urinary bladder. Most common diseases which can be diagnosed on Ultrasound KUB are Renal Calculi, Ureteric Stones, Renal Carcinoma, Bladder Cancer, Benign and Malignant Prostate Tumours etc. Most of the patients of kidney stone would experience severe pain on the back mostly on one side near the spinal cord. In order to get a quality ultrasound the combination of a good 3D Ultrasound Machine and an experienced radiologist is of paramount importance. The ultrasound machines at all our centres are 3D/4D and all the probes have more than 10000 channels for crystal clear grey scale images. Stones of the size 2-3 mm are also visible with such high resolution probes. The best advantage of ultrasound scan is that it is free of any radiation and even a pregnant woman can undergo any number of ultrasound scans without causing any damage to her body or the foetus in her tummy. Ultrasound is an excellent modality for early detection of any kind of cancer in the body.
