The blood vessels which carry the blood away from the heart are called Arteries with few exceptions. Due to faulty diet and lack of exercise, the arteries start getting clogged and this condition is called atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis. In this condition the flow of blood gets reduced to the peripheral parts of the body like the feet and the fingers. Reduced blood flow can result in several diseases including gangarene which can result in amputation. Colour Doppler uses sound waves to study the flow of blood in the arteries and detect any blockages. The same thing is achieved through CT Angiography but the cost of CT Scan is much higher than Colour Doppler and cannot be done in patients with poor kidney function. CT Scan also involves radition to the body while colour doppler of the arteries of legs and hands has no harmful radiation.
The blood vessels which carry blood towards the heart are called veins with some exceptions. Due to faulty diet and lack of exercise, the veins start getting clogged with blood clots. When blood clots are formed in deep veins of the legs and the arms, this condition is called Deep Vein Thrombosis. The symptoms for DVT include pain and swelling in one limb, reddish or bluish colour of the skin. DVT can result in a life threatening condition called Pulmonary Embolism. Colour Doppler uses sound waves to study the flow of blood in the veins and detect any blockages. The same thing is achieved through CT Angiography but the cost of CT Scan is much higher than Colour Doppler and cannot be done in patients with poor kidney function. CT Scan also involves radition to the body while colour doppler of the veins of legs and hands has no harmful radiation.
Arterial and Venous Colour Doppler of the Limbs is one of the most difficult Colour Doppler Study and takes a lot of time. Very few radiologists are trained in doing Peripheral Colour Doppler of the Arteries and Veins. The cost of Arterial or Venous Colour Doppler of One limb costs in the range of Rs. 3000 - 4000. Patients requiring Arterial and Venous Colour Doppler of one Limb have to pay Rs. 5500 - 7000. For Both Lower or Both Upper Limbs the cost would be double at Rs. 11000 - 14000. So costwise there is not much difference between Colour Doppler Study and Angiography if both the limbs have to be done. CT Angiography is done for both lower limbs. If the patient requires the study of just one limb then Colour Doppler would be cost effective.
