Women who are finding it hard to get pregnant despite trying for several months post marriage need to consult an infertility specialist. The infertility specialist will perform tests like HSG to see if there is any blockage in the fallopian tubes and some blood tests to see the hormone levels. For the male partner, Routine Semen Test is done to see the presence and motility of the sperm. If everything is fine then the patient is asked to get follicular monitoring. This test is done on Ultrasound over several days. The study normally starts from the 9th day of the commencement of menses. In this study, the radiologist would do per abdomen or tvs ultrasound to see the size of the follicle in each of the ovaries. The size of the follicle increases with each passing day and the patient has to come every day for getting the ultrasound scan. The complete study could last for 5-8 days.
When the follicle ruptures then intercourse between the male and the female in the next 48 hours could result in pregnancy. For patients of infertility it is important to establish the approximate date when the follicle ruptures so that the couple can have intercourse during that period which increases the chances of pregnancy. For some patients the follicle would not rupture but end up forming a cyst at the end of the cycle. Such patients would also find it difficult to get pregnant. Follicular monitoring is therefore one of the most important investigation for women who are trying to get pregnant. Even if the follicle in one ovary ruptures properly, the patient can get pregnant. The report for follicular monitoring therefore measures the follicle in both the ovaries on each day of the study.
The cost of follicular monitoring is in the range of Rs. 750 - 1000 for each day of the scanning. The patients can opt for paying for the complete follicular monitoring study in one go and then the cost would be Rs. 3000 - 4000. When the patient opts for the complete follicular monitoring then the number of days of scanning could be 4-8 depending upon the requirements of the patient and the growth pattern of the follicle in the ovaries. The study takes less than 5 minutes for each day and urine pressure is also not required if the study is done using TVS probe. Patients need not get this study every month.
